Admission Requirements

Applicants to the Master’s in Nursing programs at Samuel Merritt University must hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program and an active Registered Nurse license in one of the following states:

Family Nurse Practitioner Applicants:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Illinois
  • Nevada
  • Ohio
  • Texas
  • Virginia

Nurses with a bachelor’s degree in another field may apply but will be evaluated on an individual basis and may need to take additional courses. Students must have a personal computer with Internet access.

How to Apply

Nurses who meet the qualifications above must:

  • Complete our application form and pay the $80.00 application fee.
  • Must be an unencumbered RN (registered nurse) with a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) and their RN license must be in an SMU-approved state/or attainable in an SMU-approved state.
  • RNs who hold a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing may still apply and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • A minimum of a 3.0 GPA in BSN and/or Bachelor coursework is recommended but not required. A GPA less than 3.0 will require a letter of explanation.
  • Prior RN experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Proficiency in English (both spoken and written) is mandatory for success in the program.
  • If you are an international student, you may be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination. You must achieve a minimum score of 100 on the internet-based TOEFL.

All admissions decisions issued by the University are final.

Samuel Merritt University has authorized the National Student Clearinghouse to provide official transcript ordering online. To order your official transcripts, you can visit the National Student Clearinghouse Transcript Ordering Center. Transcripts must be sent to NursingCAS, the Nursing Centralized Application Service (
